The State Eligibility Test (SET) is mandatory for admissions into PhD courses and for recruitment as entry-level assistant professors in colleges and universities. While Andhra Pradesh held the exam for 56,450 applicants September , 2016, Telangana is yet to do the same.
With 2016 nearing its end, students fear that it is unlikely the university will conduct the examination even this year. “The notification for the examination is generally out before September. The entire admission process concludes by October. However, the university has not issued a notification so far, making it unlikely that SET will be held this year.
The wait for aspiring lecturers and PhD scholars in Telangana is set to get longer with the Osmania University (OU) unlikely to issue a notification to conduct the State Eligibility Test (SET) for 2016 any time soon. After 2014, this is the second time OU has not issued the notification, leaving lakhs of postgraduate students hoping to pursue PhDs in the lurch.
Incidentally , there are over 3,000 vacant teaching positions in various degree colleges. The number is much higher if vacancies of contract lecturers are taken into account. There are also approximately 400 vacant PhD seats in various departments at OU.
S Ramachandram, vice-chancellor of OU, said the university is waiting for accreditation from University Grants Commission to issue the notification. “As soon as I took over as the VC, we sent the application to the UGC seeking accreditation. The team from UGC was expected to visit campus last week to access if we have resources to conduct the exam. However, this was postponed by the UGC,“ he said, adding, “ After the visit, it will take two to three weeks for UGC to issue accreditation. After that, we will release notification.“
