The two state governments of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh and said that the Engineering, Agriculture and Medical Common Entrance Test (EAMCET) will remain a common one for the coming academic year as well, the Telangana government described it as an 'illogical and impractical suggestion' and rejected it outright.
Governor Narasimhan, in reply to a query, said: Though Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are conducting separate Intermediate examinations, keeping in mind the interests of the students, there will be a common EAMCET for the two states.
However, even as AP said it will strive for common Eamcet, Telangana ruled out such a possibility. "It would not be possible to conduct a common EAMCET or any examination for that matter in the absence of a common authority," Telangana Higher Education Council chairman T Papi Reddy. P Madhusudhan Reddy, President of Telangana Junior College Lecturers' Association, described the governor's suggestion of retaining a common Eamcet for the two states as "illogical and impractical" and said it would only serve the interests of influential AP-based corporate colleges.
But AP human resource development minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao was still hopeful. "A meeting with chief minister Chandrababu Naidu is scheduled on December 15 to review the situation in the light of Telangana's decision to hold separate Intermediate exams. A decision on Eamcet will also be taken in the meeting as Telangana is refusing to honour the provisions of the AP Reorganization Act-2014 and hold common examinations," Ganta.
Telangana appears to be firm in going its own way on the issue of these exams. "The Inter boards have been separated. If Telangana Higher Education Council conducts the common exam, it will have no control over the colleges in AP, and, likewise, if the AP Council holds it, there will be no support for it in the Telangana colleges. Therefore, the logical course should be to conduct separate examinations," Papi Reddy said.
